Life update – Finally had my surgery!

I can’t believe we’re in June already, halfway through this year. Man, have the days been flying lately! So this post is another life update. I have been very open about my bariatric surgery on my blog and there is nothing wrong with that. I am not here to encourage everyone to go that route, but I just thought that sharing my personal journey on my blog can be useful to anyone who decides to go through it.

Anyways. I finally went through the hardest part of my journey, which is the surgery and I am now 3 days post op. I am not going to say that I am feeling great right now because in reality I feel like ish. I feel sleepy and tired most of the time and don’t feel hungry as much, therefore i have to force myself to follow a eating schedule so that i get my nutrients in for the day. I feel very thirsty, but i can’t drink lots of water at  time, mostly sips of water. At this point, my stomach is the size of an egg, since i had the Roux n y, which is the standard method here in Canada; therefore, i get full very easily.

The pre-op diet stage for me was really hard. I have never fast in my life, i have always been afraid of fasting because i didn’t want to get a migraine after not eating for so long. During the pre-op diet I was taking the optifast and I did that for 2 weeks. O my Lord! these were the roughest 2 weeks for me because I felt like i was depriving myself of food. One thing i realized as I was reflecting, is how much I depended on food and how much of it i was consuming. Having the luxury to go to my fridge or pantry and eat whatever i wanted whenever i felt hungry or peckish. I also thought about the people who survived only on 1 or 2 meals a day. I realized that i was addicted to food and the pre-op diet stage was a time of reflection for me. Surviving just on 4 optifast a day, which provided me with the amount of protein, vitamins and nutrients that my body needed for the day, blew my mind. I am not gonna lie, everyday was a struggle for me. My olfactory senses was heightened because i could smell food everywhere.  I stayed home most of the time  aside from going to school and work. The point of this pre-op diet is to shrink your  liver so that it doesn’t get damaged during the procedure.  So if you are thinking about doing the surgery, just be prepared mentally, physically and emotionally for the pre-op diet.

I had my surgery on june 12, and the doctor said that everything went well according to plan, which I am really happy about. Today I am 3 days post-op and I am starting the other part of my journey. My highest weight was 282 lbs, my weight before surgery was 245 lbs. So far this has been one of my greatest accomplishments for the year and I am excited to keep on losing until i reach my goal weight.

I know this is quite a long life update, but I just wanted to share my journey on my blog. I hope you find it inspiring and useful, whether you are trying to lose weight naturally or using the bariatric surgery as a tool.

Life update – My Weight Loss Journey

Hello Everyone!!

Happy Black History Month!

Welcome back to my blog.  As you can see by the title of this post, it is a quick life update on my weight loss journey.  2018 has a lot of question marks for me, because I have no clue what to plan for this year.  I have read so many blog posts about new year resolutions and felt inspired to make my own, but when it came to actually write them down, my mind just goes blank….??? 

So I figured that this year I am not going to make resolutions, instead I am going to set some small achievable goals for both my personal  and blogging life.

One of the biggest resolutions people(including me) make on the first of January of every year is to lose weight and look good by the time summer hits. That has been my goal every single year and man, I have had a rough time with this. Last year, in one of my summer life update, I shared with you all that I am starting the process of getting bariatric surgery. Fast forward to this year, everything is so far so good, I have not changed my mind. I have been able to follow the program and went to all my scheduled appointments. Now I am just waiting for my surgery date.  What I like the most is the changes that I have been able to make during this journey such as drinking more water instead of soda and high in sugar juices. Keeping track of what I eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.  Meal prepping, reprogramming my mind about food and adopting new healthy habits. It’s a lot of work, but it is worth it. So far I have lost 20lbs pre-surgery and I am excited to continue shedding the weight off.
